About Speedo
In 1914, Speedo was founded in Australia by Alexander MacRae, a 22-year-old Scottish immigrant who arrived in the country in 1910. The company began when MacRae Hosiery manufacturers, established by Alexander in 1914, extended the manufacture of underwear to swimwear and became MacRae Knitting Mills. A naming competition was held by the staff in 1928 and won by a Captain Parsonson, who coined the slogan, "Speed on in your Speedos." In 1929, the first swimsuits were in production and it didn't take long for Speedo to successfully establish itself. World War II caused the brand turn over 90% of it's manufacturing to war production, providing the armed services with vital equipment such as mosquito nets. After the war, Speedo opened a new factory and was able to re-establish itself, due to increased demand for swimsuits. In 1951, Speedo Knitting Mills (Holdings) Ltd, was incorporated and became a publicly traded company on the Sydney Stock exchange.

Speedo hit the international stage in earnest, at the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games, and a few years later the brand grew on a more global scale. Export sales to the USA began and an international division was set up to monitor trade in New Zealand, Japan and South Africa. The expansion of the brand continued, and in 1976, Speedo was appointed as the official swimwear for the 1976 Montreal Olympics, where 52 out of 54 countries wore their swimsuits.

Speedo continues to make its mark in the pool and on the beach today. Many world class athletes who wear Speedo include U.S. phenomenon Michael Phelps, legendary Australian swimmer Grant Hackett, world record holder Kosuke Kitajima from Japan, and Holland's Inge de Bruijn.

Speedo Aqua Fitness Gloves

by Dr. Art 2006-08-18, 45 people found this review helpful
This is my 4th pair of aqua fitness gloves, my 2nd pair of this exact Speedo Aqua Fitness Glove. Allowing the fingers to protrude through the ends of the gloves is a great benefit. With other gloves, water builds up inside the glove and, if lycra-backed for example, the glove becomes like a big balloon after a short while.

These Speedo gloves allow the water to pass through the glove and out the finger-holes.

In addition, the material the gloves are made of is much sturdier than other gloves I have had. The palms hold up well as do the backs.

I recommend these gloves and will always use them in my water fitness exercises.

Strengthen your swim workout

by Rob Winger 2006-02-01, 40 people found this review helpful
These definitely do what you would expect and are fairly comfortable (although you may have some sore shoulders the next day ;-). I wasn't sure if I should get the medium or the large and wish I had gone with the smaller size.

Easy On & Off

by Gramarama 2007-01-05, 21 people found this review helpful
I'm serious about acqua aerobics and the upper body workout I can get by using these high-resistance water gloves. The unique velcro closure is a great improvement over other types which were a struggle to get on and off. Wish they had a "Medium" choice of size. They only make a S and a L. These gloves were a great find and the price was right.

Excellent exercise boost

by Comdet 2008-07-19, 16 people found this review helpful
First of all, many thanks to all the other reviewers who mentioned that these run large. I wear a XL glove, so I was going to order this in XL. Very glad I didn't - the L size fits just fine, and now that I have one, it's clear the XL would have been too big. That tip from the other reviewers saved me some return postage - thanks!

In terms of the actual glove, it's great. Fits fine, and appears well made. Very secure velcro closure on the wrist.

I use mine for aqua aerobics and to add a "boost" to my swimming workouts. I've used the plastic hand paddle in the past - they are helpful in giving more resistance, but are rather awkward to use. These - if you'll forgive the inevitable pun - fit like a glove and don't get in the way. You can increase or decrease resistance by just expanding or closing your hand.

A word of caution - if you've never used hand paddles or webbed gloves before for exercise, go slow at first. You're putting a lot more strain on your muscles, especially the shoulders. Take it easy at first until you get a feel for the workout, then slowly increase duration and speed. A bit of care will prevent a lot of pain!

NOT THE BEST

by L. Heinbach 2008-01-28, 15 people found this review helpful
All in all the gloves are acceptable. I don't know if it is just this pair, but the velcro on the left wrist is not positioned properly. Unless I make it tighter, in which case not all the velcro is overlapping, the wrist space is too large and water gets in a and makes a drag. The right wrist is fine. This is the 4th pair of gloves I've used. The best so far were by Zura, but I couldn't get the same model.

Excellent Product

Title says it all. I bought the X-Large (that's my normal glove size) but should have purchased the Large (the gloves stretch slightly).

Good for lap swimming ....

by Kevin Quinley 2007-12-09, 7 people found this review helpful
Improve your "traction" in the water, especially with lap or fitness swimming, water aerobics, etc. These gloves are comfortable and leave the fingertips open for your hands. Time will tell as to durability and how chlorine affects them over the long haul. So far, no complaints.

USE EVERY DAY FOR SWIMMING

by carol irvin 2009-08-17, 4 people found this review helpful
Day in and day out, these are the swim add on that I can't live without as I now feel as if my hands are built as they should be for swimming. After all, this is what creatures from other species who were built to swim were given as part of their DNA code. Webbed paws, what more could I wish for in the water? These are perfect for every swimming stroke: side stroke, crawl, breast stroke, all back strokes, underwater swimming. I don't even bother taking them off for surface diving. My hands and arms are so much stronger after swimming with these daily. It is the easiest thing to add into any water workout and feels part of your body from day one.

A bit stiff, but better than other gloves

by L. Stevens 2009-04-10, 4 people found this review helpful
I am on my third pair of these gloves. I wouldn't keep buying them if I didn't like them. They are made of a thick neoprene, making the gloves a bit stiff, but also providing good resistance in the water. The sizing on these gloves is generous, so if in doubt, order the smaller size. The velcro closure stays secure along the wrists, and the gloves are easy to put on and remove. They dry fairly quickly. I use them almost every day and have no problem with soggy gloves in my gym bag. If these gloves were a bit more flexible - allowing me to comfortably grasp water weights while wearing them - they'd be perfect. As it is, I can hold the weights, but it's a little uncomfortable.

What a workout!

by Alisha Hoffman 2007-11-21, 4 people found this review helpful
I have problems gripping so it's tough when the water weights come out in my Aqua fitness class. I bought these gloves hoping they'd give me similar resistance. They do! I can't believe what a great workout they helped me achieve.
